Why the Best Sourcing Agents are Never the Noisiest Online: Gresham’s Law in Supply

In economics, there is a famous principle known as Gresham’s Law: “Bad money drives out good.” It describes a phenomenon of adverse selection where the market, left to pure price competition, naturally filters out quality in favor of the cheap and substandard.

We see this everywhere in generic commodities. Walk into a standard hardware market looking for screws. What you find on the shelves isn’t the high-tensile, corrosion-resistant alloy screw; it’s the cheapest carbon steel one. Why? Because hardware shops calculate inventory turnover rates. Cheap screws sell fast. High-quality screws cost more, sit on shelves longer, and tie up capital. The exact same thing happens with unbranded zippers on standard bags—they break within months because mass-market vendors prioritize short-term margins over long-term durability. It’s why luxury brands either invest in custom tooling for their own branded hardware or enforce a strict bill of materials specifying industry giants like YKK.

Unfortunately, Gresham’s Law is currently ravaging the international sourcing and procurement industry.

The Rise of the “Keyboard Sourcing Agent”

The barrier to entry for becoming a “sourcing agent” has dropped to zero. Anyone with an internet connection, a laptop, and a social media account can claim to be a “China Sourcing Expert.”

Because they have no physical office, no registered corporate entity to protect, and—most importantly—never actually visit the factories, their overhead is virtually zero. They can afford to quote rock-bottom service fees. They have all the time in the world to stay online, chat with prospects 24/7, post flashy marketing content, and promises the world.

To an overseas buyer who doesn’t know any better, this looks like incredible responsiveness. In reality, it’s a trap.

Why the Real Experts are “Quiet”

On the flip side, look at a veteran sourcing professional or the chief engineer of a manufacturing plant. Their most valuable and limited asset is time.

A real sourcing expert’s day isn’t spent sitting in front of a laptop waiting for a DM to pop up. Their day looks like this:

    • Spending 6 hours on the highway to audit an export-grade steel fencing facility in the Yangtze River Delta.
    • Standing next to the production line, checking the micron-thickness of hot-dip galvanization layers.
    • Writing detailed Python scripts to batch-process thousands of engineering drawings, scrubbing sensitive contact data to protect their client’s intellectual property.
    • Reviewing shipping contracts and checking vessel logs for a container heading to Brisbane.

A true industry expert is scarce. Because their time is heavily consumed by high-value, high-execution operations, they cannot and will not compete in the “noise match” online. They don’t have the bandwidth to entertain low-intent tire-kickers or engage in price wars with rookies.

Scarcity is a Law of Nature

High-quality, deeply experienced assets do not circulate freely or loudly in the mass market. When a factory has airtight quality control and flawless delivery records, their capacity is usually fully booked by long-term clients who know their worth. They don’t need to discount their prices on generic B2B platforms.

When a sourcing agency operates at a high level, protecting clients from compliance nightmares and $100,000 shipment disasters, they operate primarily through trusted networks and professional reputation.

If you are choosing a sourcing partner based solely on who replies the fastest with the lowest price, you aren’t buying efficiency—you are buying a generic screw that is bound to snap under pressure. Stop looking for the loudest voice in the market. Look for the partner whose hands are actually dirty from the factory floor.
